Video Basics
Exports must be aligned precisely with the applicable technical specifications for German Version or Original Version deliveries. The following information provides general guidance for the delivery of video content.
Automated and manual QC processes include checks of technical parameters (conformance checks) as well as visual and editorial content reviews.
A video file can contain timecodes on multiple levels. The container may include a global start timecode, while individual tracks (e.g. video and audio) may additionally contain their own timecode information.
All timecode values must start at 00:00:00:00 and increase continuously and linearly throughout the entire duration, without any jumps or repetitions.
It must be ensured that delivered video content is encoded in Limited Range (also referred to as “Legal Range” or “Nominal Video Range”). Values exceeding this range are considered over-levels. The use of the headroom above the nominal range must be avoided in accordance with EBU R103, but is tolerated.
Values within the Full Range (“File-Full”) will be rejected.
Incorrect handling of the video range can result in display errors such as elevated black levels or missing highlights.
The signal range can be represented in different ways. It can be expressed as decimal values, percentages, or mV (the representation in mV originates from the analogue era but is still used by some measurement instruments).
% | mV | 8 Bit | 10 Bit | 12 Bit | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No video allowed | >109 | >763 | >255 | >1020 | >4080 | ||
| Upper Limit Headroom | EBU R103 | 105 | 735 | 246 | 984 | 3936 | |

In general, all video files must be delivered in 16:9 (1.78:1).
Pillarbox formats must be agreed upon in advance with the responsible License Content Coordinator.
To ensure the correct display of all essential picture content on consumer devices, compliance with the safe areas defined in EBU R 95 – especially the Action Safe Area – is required.
